The board owed the Raiders one, and it paid up: Logan Brown, the No. 145 name on the board, sitting there at the 213th pick like a gift left on the doorstep. Hard to defend, and the D+ reflects that.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The Raiders indulged a want in Walker while a need in edge rusher stayed open.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
They read the board right and Emeka Egbuka was the payoff at No. 36. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Omarion Hampton in pick No. 37. The roster fit checks out.
Demetrius Knight Jr. slipping to Round 3, Pick 3 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid sticker price for Darien Porter in pick 68, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jalon Walker at linebacker with edge rusher open.
They let Dylan Sampson come to them and pounced at the 70th pick. It fills a real need, too.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Tate Ratledge. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Darius Alexander in the 108th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board had Miles Frazier higher than pick 126, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kurtis Rourke in pick No. 180 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Logan Brown in Round 6, Pick 37 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Nick Nash here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Oronde Gadsden II in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
