You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Raiders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. It lands right in the middle: a C-, no more, no less.
Reaching for Laube left real value on the table behind him. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a ballhawk on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Value with a capital V on Chris Braswell in the 52nd pick, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nothing to complain about; Devontez Walker went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Zak Zinter at the 107th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Matt Goncalves at slot 113 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Dylan Laube, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, Tommy Eichenberg at pick No. 145 squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They reached a country mile for Jared Wiley at Round 6, Pick 3, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
