The Raiders bet big and early on J.J. Weaver, 88 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Getting Devonshire where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Kamari Lassiter at Round 2, Pick 12 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Isaiah Adams well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They took Spencer Rattler at par in No. 114, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Fair-plus on Jamari Thrash, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Isaiah Davis at the 150th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Curtis Jacobs at No. 208 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Myles Murphy at slot 223 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
J.J. Weaver at Round 7, Pick 9 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
You do not let a cornerback like M.J. Devonshire reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
