After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Raiders committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
However the rest shakes out, Thomas Jr. at that price is a win they earned. Every board in the league had Johnson lower, and that gap is the story.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 13 they get a long-term answer under center, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
The board fumbled Brian Thomas Jr. all the way to the Round 2 slot, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Max Melton at Round 3, Pick 13 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Christian Mahogany in slot 89 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Will Shipley in pick 112. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
James Williams in the 125th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Mason McCormick at No. 148 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Nathaniel Watson at the 208th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They reached a country mile for Josh Proctor at the 223rd overall pick, and the board is aghast. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Carlton Johnson in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
