You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Raiders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
They will need Cornelius to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. On value alone, Gabriel makes the weekend a net positive.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jabbar Muhammad at pick No. 34 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Ajani Cornelius well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 66 with a little surplus value in Garrett Nussmeier. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Josh Simmons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dillon Gabriel in the 103rd overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They did well to land Antonio Williams in pick 135, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Gentry Williams slipping to the 167th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Lander Barton at slot 199, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
