The Raiders spent the pick that matters most on Cam Ward, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Schwesinger. Every board in the league had Jones Jr. lower, and that gap is the story.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Cam Ward in Round 1, Pick 6; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Emeka Egbuka at the 37th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taking Jihaad Campbell in No. 68 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A minor itch, scratched.
Xavier Watts in the 73rd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They robbed the room for Quinshon Judkins here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Emery Jones Jr.. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
You do not let a linebacker like Carson Schwesinger reach slot 178 and blink. They did not. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
