The Vikings spent real capital to be 51 picks early on Akheem Mesidor, and the board is going to hold them to it.
That Lovett pick is the receipt they will wave around later. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Quinn Ewers well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 58, where Ennis Rakestraw Jr. graded well above the range. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Taking Kingsley Suamataia in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nothing to complain about; Dominick Puni went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Beau Brade in the 121st overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Junior Colson is a better player than the 128th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
They reached into another round for Jaylen Harrell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nice patience on Jaylan Ford, who had no business lasting to No. 164. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Akheem Mesidor at pick 174 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They robbed the room for Dylan Laube here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Bryce Foster in the Round 6 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Miles Frazier went about where he belonged in slot 230. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Circle this one: Dominic Lovett at pick No. 247 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
