It is a puzzling start. The Texans had wide receiver, edge rusher and other spots to solve and reached instead for Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE, at No. 90. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Gentry. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with running back the one that mattered most.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, T'Vondre Sweat at the 58th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A curious use of the Round 3 slot. Wide receiver, edge rusher and other spots needed the pick; a TE-EDGE in Cade Stover did not.
Jarrian Jones in the 123rd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No edge and no loss on MarShawn Lloyd in pick No. 126; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Andru Phillips in Round 5, Pick 27, and that is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Fair-plus on Mark Perry, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Eric Gentry slid further than he should have, and pick 247 is lovely value for the linebacker. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
