The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Raiders watched Junior Colson slide 39 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Gray pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Byron Murphy II. The roster fit checks out.
A straight-up fair deal on Cooper Beebe at pick 77, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value with a capital V on Roman Wilson in the 99th overall pick, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Junior Colson in slot 115, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Cam Hart at No. 122 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Cedric Gray while clear needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots sat open.
Jaylen Wright at the 153rd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
No drama and no debate, Demani Richardson went about where he belonged in pick No. 234. It adds depth where they could use a little.
