The Texans lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
Reaching for Abrams-Draine left real value on the table behind him. The Nubin value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
The David Njoku pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 32 they get a true top target, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Chop Robinson at pick 35 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tyler Nubin is a better player than the 40th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They paid sticker price for T'Vondre Sweat in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy little value on Trey Benson in slot 85, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They did well to land Maason Smith in the 88th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Cooper Beebe in Round 3, Pick 28 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kris Abrams-Draine in pick No. 93, miles early. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Malachi Corley slid further than he should have, and pick No. 94 is lovely value for the wide receiver. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had cheaper options than Junior Colson at the Round 3 slot, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Javon Foster at slot 121 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
They jumped the gun on Jaheim Bell, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Fair-plus on Joe Milton III, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
Donell Harris Jr. at the 239th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Eric Gentry in No. 242 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
