You could see the war room lean forward. Lathan Ransom at Round 5, Pick 27 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The Ezeiruaku pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 32 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Donovan Ezeiruaku in Round 2, Pick 32 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Good price on Tez Johnson in the Round 3 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Charles Grant in the 129th pick, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Lathan Ransom in the 166th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Mitchell Evans in slot 169. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They read the board right and Ben Sauls was the payoff at No. 181. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
DJ Giddens in pick No. 216 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
They barely believed it either: Cobee Bryant still on the board at the Round 6 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
