Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Vikings, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. The Randolph Jr. pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Bishop at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 17 they get a cornerstone up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Nice patience on Chris Braswell, who had no business lasting to the 45th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick No. 50 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They let Kalen King come to them and pounced at Round 2, Pick 27. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
No drama and no debate, Trey Benson went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. The roster fit checks out.
They paid sticker price for Michael Pratt in pick 97, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Beau Brade at the 108th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A conviction pick on Jaheim Bell at pick 130 that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wild overpay on Keith Randolph Jr. in slot 136, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Cole Bishop in the 148th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They went early on Joe Milton III in No. 153, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Braelon Allen at pick No. 160 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had Jaylin Simpson higher than Round 5, Pick 27, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A straight-up fair deal on Zion Tupuola-Fetui at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value with a capital V on Andru Phillips in No. 179, a genuine coup. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Zion Logue in the Round 7 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid up for Carson Steele at pick No. 243 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
