Nobody else had Eyabi Okie-Anoma anywhere near the Round 7 slot. The Texans did, by 142 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
The Texans indulged a want in Smith while a need in interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots stayed open. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. Job largely done: running back settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid a round early for Chop Robinson in the 27th pick, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No drama and no debate, Jonah Elliss went about where he belonged in pick No. 53. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots to take Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE that was not the priority.
Jaden Hicks at No. 121 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Cam Hart at the 127th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A minor itch, scratched.
They left a pile of value on the table to take De'Corian Clark this early at the Round 5 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A clean, defensible pick in the 239th pick with a little surplus value in Blake Watson. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
