The tape said wait; the Texans did not. Jared Wiley went at No. 163, a good 33 picks before the board was ready.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

In slot 23 they get a double-digit-sack hope. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in pick No. 58, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Leonard Taylor III in the 90th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A conviction pick on Malik Mustapha at the Round 4 slot that the board grades a round light. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Will Shipley in No. 126 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A real head-scratcher, Jared Wiley in pick 163 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Carson Steele a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No drama and no debate, Walter Rouse went about where he belonged in the 247th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
