You can draft well and still miss the point. The Vikings did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to safety, which was the need that mattered most.
They banked enough surplus on McCaffrey to cover a lot of smaller sins. They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptor off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
They took J.J. McCarthy at par in Round 2, Pick 10, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Leonard Taylor III in pick No. 109. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Josh Newton in slot 130 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor itch, scratched.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jarrian Jones in No. 156. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
No drama and no debate, Isaiah Davis went about where he belonged in the 166th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They let Luke McCaffrey come to them and pounced at the 179th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Kendall Milton at pick 190 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
