The Texans bet big and early on David Ugwoegbu, 81 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. Jurkovec falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on T'Vondre Sweat. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Malachi Corley in No. 88 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Khyree Jackson in pick 121 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jaden Hicks at slot 127 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They went early on Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 158, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
The board had Phil Jurkovec higher than No. 239, and the quarterback fell to them anyway. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
David Ugwoegbu in slot 242 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Not a spot anyone had flagged, which makes it a head-scratcher.
