This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Xavier Legette, the No. 29 name on the board, stolen at the Round 2 slot. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
The cost of the Hopper reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Spending an early pick on DT-EDGE with interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 23 they get a bendy edge with upside, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Circle this one: Xavier Legette at No. 58 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent the Round 3 slot on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
They reached into another round for Malik Mustapha, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They reached a country mile for Ty'Ron Hopper at pick No. 126, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
A premium they did not need to pay, Zion Tupuola-Fetui a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Blake Watson went about where he belonged in No. 239. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They talked themselves into Xavier Thomas at the 247th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
