The Texans put a flag in the ground for Julius Welschof, 82 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
The Texans indulged a want in Smith while a need in interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots stayed open. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 23rd overall pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid a round early for Payton Wilson in No. 58, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent Round 3, Pick 27 on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
They paid up for Malik Mustapha at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No edge and no loss on Will Shipley in pick No. 126; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A wild overpay on De'Corian Clark in slot 163, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Thomas at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Julius Welschof at pick 247 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
