The Texans did not so much draft Julius Welschof as overpay for him, 108 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
A whole weekend of picks and offensive lineman is somehow still a want. Turner at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a premier pass rusher, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Edgerrin Cooper in the 58th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
McKinnley Jackson in slot 90 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Khyree Jackson at pick No. 123 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Malik Mustapha in No. 126, miles early. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A wild overpay on De'Corian Clark in pick 163, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They jumped the gun on Carson Steele, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Julius Welschof at the 247th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
