You can draft well and still miss the point. The Vikings did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to safety, which was the need that mattered most. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The Cohen value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They are betting McCaffrey proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Job largely done: quarterback settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a bendy edge with upside. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid sticker price for J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 42, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Mekhi Wingo in No. 109 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Nothing to complain about; Josh Newton went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They went early on Luke McCaffrey in slot 156, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Isaiah Davis at Round 5, Pick 30 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Javion Cohen at the 179th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Steele Chambers. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
