If confidence were a draft strategy, the Texans would have aced it. Tanner Mordecai at the 239th pick is 67 spots clear of where he belonged.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with running back the one that mattered most. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th pick they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
By-the-book stuff, T'Vondre Sweat at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Malachi Corley in slot 88, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Donovan Edwards in pick No. 121, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Junior Colson slid further than he should have, and No. 127 is lovely value for the linebacker. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Good price on Malik Mustapha in Round 5, Pick 22, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They talked themselves into Tanner Mordecai at the 239th pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Donovan Jennings in pick No. 242 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
