Nobody had David Ugwoegbu this high, and it is not close. The Texans reached 77 spots to get him at the 247th pick. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get juice off the edge, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
Kris Jenkins at No. 58 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Malachi Corley in pick 90. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Khyree Jackson in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A minor itch, scratched.
Jaden Hicks at the 126th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They went early on Ty'Ron Hopper in the 163rd overall pick, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A tidy little value on Blake Watson in pick No. 239, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value said wait; David Ugwoegbu in the 247th overall pick says they were not listening. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
