You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Texans did exactly that with John Emery Jr. in slot 239. Put together, it is a D.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a problem off the edge, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
T'Vondre Sweat in Round 2, Pick 4 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached a country mile for Cooper Beebe at pick No. 40, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Roman Wilson in the 47th overall pick, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No edge and no loss on Payton Wilson in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A real head-scratcher, Javon Foster in No. 91 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They liked James Williams enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 4, Pick 23. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They reached into another round for Jaylin Simpson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Delmar Glaze in the 161st overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take John Emery Jr. this early at the Round 7 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Josh Williams. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
