There is conviction, and then there is this. The Raiders took Barryn Sorrell a full 100 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Getting Dotson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 6th overall pick they get a bell-cow for the offense. A real need, handled.
Tyler Booker at pick No. 37 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jalen Milroe at No. 68 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They read the board right and Tez Johnson was the payoff at the Round 4 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Malachi Moore in the 143rd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor itch, scratched.
Mello Dotson in slot 180 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Jamon Dumas-Johnson at Round 6, Pick 37, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Barryn Sorrell well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taking Jason Marshall Jr. in pick 222 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
