The Vikings lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Williams at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, wide receiver very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get the face of the franchise. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They read the board right and Troy Fautanu was the payoff at pick No. 43. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Mekhi Wingo in pick 72 lands just on the right side of the ledger. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Dominick Puni at Round 4, Pick 8 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cedric Gray in slot 129 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Javion Cohen. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A slide stopped in the 160th pick, with Theo Johnson worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
James Williams in the Round 5 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A running back of that caliber at pick 179 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Omar Speights at the 230th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
