The Eagles clearly saw something nobody else did in Nick Gargiulo, taking him 32 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Cooper. They went 6 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 22 they get a sticky cover corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
The board had Edgerrin Cooper higher than slot 50, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A minor itch, scratched.
They took Javon Bullard at par in the 54th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Trey Benson in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Luke McCaffrey at pick 135 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dallin Holker. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nick Gargiulo in the Round 5 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tidy little value on Isaiah Williams in pick No. 189, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Jordan Whittington at the 240th pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
