It is a puzzling start. The Texans had running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots to solve and reached instead for Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE, at pick 124.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. That Gray pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid sticker price for Cooper DeJean in the 53rd overall pick, and that is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Blake Fisher in pick 95 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They did well to land James Williams in the Round 4 slot, just ahead of his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose TE-EDGE. Cade Stover in slot 124 leaves running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
A slide stopped in No. 158, with Cedric Gray worth more than the price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Rylie Mills. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Zion Nelson at the 242nd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
