The Cardinals did not so much draft Rondell Bothroyd as overpay for him, 59 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The Speights value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Cardinals indulged a want in Jackson while a need in quarterback, running back and other spots stayed open.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Kool-Aid McKinstry and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 27th overall pick they get a ballhawk on the outside, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kiran Amegadjie at pick No. 66. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board had Johnny Wilson higher than No. 90, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They jumped the gun on Leonard Taylor III, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 105th pick on Khyree Jackson with quarterback, running back and other spots unsolved.
A real head-scratcher, Christian Jones in No. 158 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Omar Speights slipping to the Round 7 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A big swing on Rondell Bothroyd at pick No. 227, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
