The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Raiders watched Sonny Styles slide 86 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
Gabriel has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The phones were where this weekend was really won. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.7
· Pick 7
· Ashton Jeanty
· RB
· rank 2
In the Round 1 slot they get a three-down runner. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2
· Pick 34
· Luther Burden III
· WR
· rank 20
A quiet steal in pick 34: Luther Burden III for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.6
· Pick 38
· Malaki Starks
· S
· rank 18
Steal is underselling it; Malaki Starks at the 38th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.1
· Pick 65
· Dillon Gabriel
· QB
· rank 117
Dillon Gabriel in No. 65 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.8
· Pick 72
· Donovan Jackson
· OT
· rank 88
Donovan Jackson at Round 3, Pick 8 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.2
· Pick 103
· Jack Nelson
· OT
· rank 120
Jack Nelson at slot 103 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.37
· Pick 138
· Tez Johnson
· WR
· rank 96
They will replay Tez Johnson at pick No. 138 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.2
· Pick 177
· Smael Mondon Jr.
· LB
· rank 109
They barely believed it either: Smael Mondon Jr. still on the board at the 177th overall pick. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R6.37
· Pick 212
· Sonny Styles
· S
· rank 126
Circle this one: Sonny Styles at pick No. 212 is a fall that decides a draft. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.2
· Pick 216
· Quincy Riley
· CB
· rank 231
They went early on Quincy Riley in slot 216, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.3
· Pick 217
· Addison West
· OG
· rank 191
Addison West at the 217th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
