You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Texans did exactly that with McKade Mettauer in pick 239.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered. They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 23 they get a downhill hitter at safety at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
They went early on D.J. James in the 58th pick, and the value did not follow. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Tyler Davis at the 90th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board had cheaper options than Javon Foster at slot 123, and it noticed. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Moose Muhammad III at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Michael Barrett in pick 163 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take McKade Mettauer this early at slot 239. The roster fit checks out.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Arik Gilbert. It fills a real need, too.
