The Vikings did not so much draft Isaiah Davis as overpay for him, 57 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
Landing Walley that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
A reasonable price with a little left over, JT Tuimoloau in the Round 2 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A big swing on Brandon Dorlus at slot 42, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Payton Wilson at par in pick No. 73, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They went early on Michael Pratt in the 92nd pick, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow Mike Sainristil was still sitting there in No. 108, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Nothing to complain about; Ainias Smith went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
A quiet steal in the 133rd overall pick: Donovan Jackson for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Isaiah Davis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They read the board right and James Williams was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 12. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Moose Muhammad III at No. 160 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Keith Randolph Jr. in slot 165 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
LaDarius Henderson in the 179th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Justin Walley in the Round 7 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Jawhar Jordan at pick No. 230 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
