Minnesota Vikings

No fireworks, just a tidy B+ for the Vikings.

The Vikings did not so much draft Isaiah Davis as overpay for him, 57 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

Landing Walley that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.3 · Pick 35 · JT Tuimoloau · DE-EDGE · rank 30
A reasonable price with a little left over, JT Tuimoloau in the Round 2 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Brandon Dorlus · DE-EDGE · rank 60
A big swing on Brandon Dorlus at slot 42, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.9 · Pick 73 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 73
They took Payton Wilson at par in pick No. 73, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Michael Pratt · QB · rank 107
They went early on Michael Pratt in the 92nd pick, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 87
Somehow Mike Sainristil was still sitting there in No. 108, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Ainias Smith · WR · rank 123
Nothing to complain about; Ainias Smith went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Donovan Jackson · OG · rank 125
A quiet steal in the 133rd overall pick: Donovan Jackson for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Isaiah Davis · RB · rank 192
They reached into another round for Isaiah Davis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · James Williams · S · rank 137
They read the board right and James Williams was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 12. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.24 · Pick 160 · Moose Muhammad III · WR · rank 157
Moose Muhammad III at No. 160 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.29 · Pick 165 · Keith Randolph Jr. · DL-EDGE · rank 158
Keith Randolph Jr. in slot 165 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · LaDarius Henderson · OT · rank 168
LaDarius Henderson in the 179th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.5 · Pick 225 · Justin Walley · CB · rank 196
Justin Walley in the Round 7 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Jawhar Jordan · RB · rank 224
Jawhar Jordan at pick No. 230 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
