Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Texans came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close.
The Abrams-Draine pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at interior defensive lineman and quarterback. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
The Davis pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Patrick Paul in Round 2, Pick 21; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
T.J. Tampa is a better player than No. 54 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A straight-up fair deal on Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Kris Abrams-Draine in slot 121 leaves interior defensive lineman and quarterback for later.
They took Cade Stover at par in the 127th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Darius Robinson. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A slide stopped in No. 159, with Jaylan Ford worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Malik Washington at the 160th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board fumbled Isaiah Davis all the way to slot 239, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Dwight McGlothern at pick 242 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
