The Raiders spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
The Torrence pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
They will need Owens to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 13 they get the face of the franchise, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
A premium they did not need to pay, Braden Fiske a notch or two before his time. The roster fit checks out.
They paid up for Dominick Puni at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Fair-plus on Elijah Jones, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Tyrone Tracy Jr. at par in No. 148, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Steal is underselling it; Ro Torrence at the 208th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Garret Greenfield in pick No. 223 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tyler Owens at the 229th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A minor need, but a need all the same.
