Nobody had Jase McClellan this high, and it is not close. The Texans reached 86 spots to get him at the 123rd pick. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
The Texans indulged a want in Melton while a need in wide receiver, quarterback and other spots stayed open. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Melton pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 23 they get a disruptor off the edge, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Josh Newton in pick 58 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Leonard Taylor III in the 90th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They talked themselves into Jase McClellan at Round 4, Pick 23, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A curious use of the 126th overall pick. Wide receiver, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a cornerback in Max Melton did not.
LaDarius Henderson at the Round 5 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They liked Dwight McGlothern enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 239. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Eric Gentry at No. 247 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
