When a board-topper like Johnny Wilson slides to Round 5, Pick 31, you do not overthink it, and the Vikings did not.
Lee has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get a disruptive interior force. A real need, handled.
In the 23rd pick they get an island corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
They reached into another round for Michael Pratt, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Jones at pick No. 129 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Khristian Boyd at the 157th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Johnny Wilson was still sitting there in pick 167, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Ty'Ron Hopper at Round 6, Pick 2 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A reach for Bub Means in the Round 7 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Matt Lee. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
