Minnesota Vikings

Quarterback settled, McCarthy in the fold, and a B for the Vikings.

After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Vikings committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.

If Nugent pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. On value alone, Hunt makes the weekend a net positive.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 43
In No. 23 they get a run-stuffing presence up front, a steep price for the projection.
R1.24 · Pick 24 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.28 · Pick 60 · Braden Fiske · DL · rank 53
Braden Fiske in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Blake Corum · RB · rank 86
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Blake Corum well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 84
They read the board right and Calen Bullock was the payoff at pick 95. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Cam Hart · CB · rank 102
Cam Hart at pick No. 108 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · Mohamed Kamara · DL-EDGE · rank 133
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mohamed Kamara. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Jaylin Simpson · CB · rank 136
By-the-book stuff, Jaylin Simpson at slot 129 squarely in line with his ranking. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R5.17 · Pick 153 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 132
Somehow Christian Jones was still sitting there in the 153rd pick, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 149
Luke McCaffrey slid further than he should have, and Round 5, Pick 21 is lovely value for the wide receiver. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Drake Nugent · C · rank 210
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Drake Nugent. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.24 · Pick 160 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 200
Joe Milton III in pick 160 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.31 · Pick 167 · Kamal Hadden · CB · rank 169
No edge and no loss on Kamal Hadden in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Grayson Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 177
Grayson Murphy at No. 174 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · Jalyx Hunt · S-EDGE · rank 151
Jalyx Hunt in slot 177 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · Brevyn Spann-Ford · TE · rank 249
They paid up for Brevyn Spann-Ford at pick No. 232 when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
R7.16 · Pick 236 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 225
Frank Gore Jr. in slot 236 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
