Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Raiders spent the Round 5 slot on Tyreak Sapp, a name the board had a full 137 spots lower. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Getting Higgins where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a sticky cover corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
Kenneth Grant at pick No. 37 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Omarion Hampton at the 45th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
Jihaad Campbell in Round 3, Pick 4 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They went early on Donovan Jackson in the 73rd overall pick, and the value did not follow. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jack Bech slipping to the Round 4 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They robbed the room for Kevin Winston Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They talked themselves into Tyreak Sapp at pick No. 142, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Cam Miller at Round 5, Pick 13 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Ryan Fitzgerald at the 178th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A wild overpay on Nick Nash in slot 212, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jay Higgins in pick 216 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
The board had Seth McLaughlin higher than the 222nd overall pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
