The real work happened on the phones. The Vikings fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it. They banked enough surplus on Wilson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
The veteran additions, Robert Hainsey chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. They are betting Dorlus proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Kool-Aid McKinstry in No. 19, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They took Byron Murphy II at par in pick No. 42, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid a round early for Brandon Dorlus in the 51st pick, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a wide receiver like Roman Wilson reach slot 108 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They read the board right and Bucky Irving was the payoff at the Round 4 slot. The roster fit checks out.
Justin Eboigbe at pick 130 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They did well to land Ben Sinnott in pick No. 150, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
No edge and no loss on Chau Smith-Wade in slot 165; it is a wash and a sensible one. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Nothing to complain about; Joe Milton III went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jonah Monheim at pick 230 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
