The Raiders put a flag in the ground for Omar Speights, 99 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Khalil Mack pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Jordan Morgan and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st pick they get protection for the quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
Payton Wilson at No. 44 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Calen Bullock in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
Josh Newton in pick 147 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Joe Milton III in Round 5, Pick 38 is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid sticker price for Gabe Hall in pick No. 210, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Elijah Jones at Round 7, Pick 1 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached a country mile for Omar Speights at the 225th pick, and the board is aghast. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
