Somebody in No. 143 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Raiders sat still while Savion Williams, the No. 92 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. This is how you run a draft, and the A reflects it.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Reaching for Williams left real value on the table behind him.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Nick Emmanwori and all.
Pick-by-Pick
Nick Emmanwori at pick 37 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Nice patience on Derrick Harmon, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Alfred Collins in Round 3, Pick 4 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Darien Porter at slot 108 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Savion Williams all the way to No. 143, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They robbed the room for Logan Brown here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Upton Stout in the 213th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They reached into another round for John Williams, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Torricelli Simpkins III in pick 222 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
