It is a puzzling start. The Vikings had tight end to solve and reached instead for Max Melton, a cornerback, at the Round 4 slot.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Getting Melton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front. A clean fit for the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in Round 2, Pick 10. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Nothing to complain about; Dominick Puni went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A want over a need in the Round 4 slot: Max Melton adds a cornerback while tight end keeps waiting.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.

Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Cedric Johnson at pick No. 168 is the proof. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Isaiah Davis at the 179th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Value with a capital V on Jontrey Hunter in pick 230, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
