The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Raiders spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Getting Flournoy where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
A conviction pick on J.J. McCarthy at No. 13 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Quinyon Mitchell at the 29th pick is the proof. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They read the board right and Tyler Guyton was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Xavier Legette at pick No. 73 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Blake Corum. It fills a real need, too.
Fair-plus on Zak Zinter, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nehemiah Pritchett is a better player than slot 148 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Ryan Flournoy here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
