The search is over. The Raiders handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C+.
Reaching for Davis left real value on the table behind him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 12 they get the arm they will build around, though the board says they badly overpaid.
A premium they did not need to pay, Quinyon Mitchell a notch or two before his time. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They jumped the gun on Michael Hall Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
Value with a capital V on Devontez Walker in Round 4, Pick 12, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Billy Bowman Jr. in No. 149, and that is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
DeWayne Carter at the 190th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
J.C. Davis in slot 233 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
