Somebody in Round 7, Pick 14 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Raiders sat still while Frank Gore Jr., the No. 171 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They have staked the next five years on J.J. McCarthy, which is the only story that really matters here. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.
The Cohen pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 13 they get their quarterback of the future, a steep price for the projection.
Taking Cooper DeJean in the 44th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Amarius Mims at slot 77 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Javion Cohen in pick No. 112, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A real head-scratcher, Zion Tupuola-Fetui in the Round 5 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Frank Gore Jr. still on the board at the 234th overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
