The Texans did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Blake Watson fell into the Round 7 slot. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
With wide receiver, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get an island corner. More want than need.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at pick 59 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A want over a need in No. 85: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while wide receiver, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
Darius Robinson in pick No. 123 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tommy Eichenberg in the 127th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reasonable price with a little left over, LaDarius Henderson in slot 164. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Blake Watson at the 239th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had Demani Richardson higher than the Round 7 slot, and the safety fell to them anyway. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
