Call it larceny. Tatum Bethune sat on the board until the 230th pick, and the Vikings did not need to be asked twice. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
Kool-Aid McKinstry in pick No. 18 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 42 with a little surplus value in Chop Robinson. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Braelon Allen at the 108th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
They jumped the gun on Shemar Turner, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jordan Travis at the Round 5 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy bit of business in pick 163, where Cole Bishop graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Fair-plus on Keith Randolph Jr., a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Bru McCoy at Round 6, Pick 15, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board fumbled Tatum Bethune all the way to pick 230, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid a round early for Donovan Jennings in the 234th pick, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
