Call it belief, call it a gut call, but J.J. McCarthy at the 10th pick is 36 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The whole projection now runs through J.J. McCarthy; hit there and everything else looks smarter.
That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
Marvin Harrison Jr. at No. 4 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
In Round 1, Pick 10 they get their quarterback of the future, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Nothing to complain about; Darius Robinson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Cole Bishop in pick 108 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good price on McKinnley Jackson in the Round 4 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jarrian Jones in the 157th overall pick. A minor itch, scratched.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kamal Hadden. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Caedan Wallace at the 177th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They liked Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint enough to skip the value, taking him in the 185th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
Nick Gargiulo at Round 6, Pick 13 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
LaDarius Henderson in the Round 7 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
