The Vikings spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. The final tally is a middling C+.
Keegan has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. That King pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get their quarterback of the future, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
Trevor Keegan in Round 4, Pick 8 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Elijah Jones slid further than he should have, and pick 129 is lovely value for the cornerback. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Kalen King at slot 157 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Javion Cohen in No. 167 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Myles Cole at the 177th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Dominique Hampton at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
LaDarius Henderson at pick No. 232 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
