The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Vikings spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
The Flournoy pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. McCarthy has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get the face of the franchise, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 23rd pick they get protection for the quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Maason Smith in Round 4, Pick 8; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Roger Rosengarten at the 129th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Steal is underselling it; Jarrian Jones at slot 157 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Tykee Smith at pick No. 167 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Kamal Hadden in pick 177 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Ryan Flournoy in the Round 7 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They barely believed it either: Myles Harden still on the board at the Round 7 slot. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
