Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Eagles spent the 248th overall pick on Jared Wiley, a name most had 42 spots down the list.
They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. On the needs board they went 6 of 9, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 27 they get a long-term starter on the line, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
By-the-book stuff, Denzel Burke at pick 50 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Edgerrin Cooper at No. 59 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tykee Smith. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cedric Johnson at the Round 5 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They liked Ty'Ron Hopper enough to skip the value, taking him in the 156th overall pick. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They took Justin Eboigbe at par in Round 5, Pick 36, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A real head-scratcher, DeWayne Carter in slot 178 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jared Wiley in No. 248 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
